TEN ferry services on the Langkawi-Kuala Kedah route were cancelled today for the third consecutive day due to strong winds and high waves.

Konsortium Ferrylines Ventures Sdn Bhd managing director, Capt Baharin Baharom, said that safety concerns prompted the cancellations, with winds exceeding 40 km/h and waves reaching 3.5 meters in the Kuala Kedah waters.

“The 8.30 am ferry from Langkawi to Kuala Kedah with 589 passengers was also forced to turn back due to rough seas,” he said in a statement.

A total of five ferry trips from Langkawi to Kuala Kedah were cancelled, affecting 2,472 passengers. The cancelled departures included those scheduled for 8.30 am, 10.30 am, 12 pm, 1.30 pm, and 2.30 pm.

The return route, Kuala Kedah to Langkawi, also faced disruptions with five cancellations impacting 1,041 passengers. These cancellations included ferries originally scheduled for 10 am, 11.30 am, 1.30 pm, 3 pm, and 4.30 pm.

“Travel diversions through the Kuala Perlis Passenger Terminal will be implemented based on capacity and approval from the Marine Department of Malaysia,” Baharin added.

Passengers with cancelled tickets can request a refund or reschedule their travel dates. Additionally, those who purchased ferry insurance (valued at RM1.08) can file a claim.

The insurance details include 4-8 hours resulting in a RM50 claim, while delays exceeding 8 hours warrant a RM200 claim. Other benefits include medical expenses coverage of up to RM1,000 for accidents, lost luggage coverage of up to RM200, death or permanent disability coverage of up to RM30,000 for accidents, and burial expenses of RM500.
