Close to Home, Easy on the Wallet: Top Malaysian Travel Trends

WITH the recent Merdeka, Malaysia Day, and the school holidays, Malaysians have geared up for well-deserved getaways. Travel platform Klook recently unveiled insights into the preferences of Malaysian holidaymakers.

Budget-Conscious Spending

When it comes to spending, 35% of respondents indicated a willingness to spend between RM500 and RM1,000 per person on domestic trips, excluding transportation. This was the most popular spending range, reflecting a preference for affordable yet enjoyable travel experiences. Only 8% were willing to spend more than RM3,000.

Domestic or International?

Over half of Malaysians (67%) expressed an equal preference for both domestic and international travel. This balanced interest suggests a desire to explore diverse destinations while remaining mindful of expenses.

Asian Destinations

For overseas travel, East Asia, including Japan, South Korea, and China, was the most favored region, with 74% of respondents expressing interest. Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, etc.) followed closely, with 60% showing interest.

Local Favorites

Within Malaysia, 36% of respondents said they travel quarterly. Kuala Lumpur (58%), Penang (57%), and Melaka (47%) emerged as the most popular destinations.

Top Reasons for Travel

Relaxation and leisure were the primary motivations for domestic travel, cited by 87% of respondents. Exploring new places followed, with 70% eager to discover fresh experiences within the country. Visiting family and friends influenced 56% of travellers, while adventure and outdoor activities motivated 54%.

Digital Influence

The survey revealed that 69% of respondents rely on online reviews and ratings when planning their holidays. Recommendations from friends and family (67%) and travel blogs and websites (64%) were also crucial, highlighting the importance of both digital and personal advice in shaping travel plans.
